About the Book

Lopsided

Lopsided shows me wobbling along in Berkeley, 40 years after my brother's death. I meet my former self and she meets me. I'm a cancer survivor. She's not especially happy to see me. The two of us have conversations about grief then and now, mediated by thinking about, of course, theories of symmetry. But we also wonder about Thucydides and Edward Gibbon and their theories of history, the movie Annie, the social phenomenon of gift-giving, Odysseus' scar, quantum entanglement, etc. while continuing to try to come to terms with our changed body and the enduring, troublesome grief about our brother.

Lopsided navigates the landscape of the past, as if my dead brother were my Eurydice, leading me on a journey through the landscapes of my then and my now, revealing my different selves. I had to be 70 years old to write this, my first book.

I am looking for a publisher.

What Allan wrote about the book he did not live to finish feels true of Lopsided, even though I am no scholar.
